Plain-English AI glossary
A few words you may meet. You can use a chatbot without memorizing them.
AI
A broad name for computer systems that perform tasks such as generating text or recognizing speech.
Chatbot
A tool you can talk to by typing or speaking. It responds to your requests.
Prompt
The words you give an AI tool to explain what you want.
Follow-up
A second request that corrects, narrows, or improves an answer.
Generated answer
Text or another result produced by the tool. Treat it as a draft until checked.
Hallucination
A confident-sounding AI answer that includes invented or incorrect information.
Voice clone
Audio made to imitate a person’s voice. A familiar-sounding call is not proof of who is speaking.
Data controls
Settings a service provides for managing things such as chat history and use of conversations.
